No.

Do I have to be certified to get a medical transcription job?

No, medical transcriptionists do not need to be certified to get a job. However, having AAMT certification does help you in getting a good job.

Medical transcription is the industry that renders doctor dictated reports, procedures, and notes into an electronic or paper format in order to create files representing the treatment history of patients. Health practitioners dictate what they have done after performing procedures on patients.

What is the future of the medical transcription industry?

There will be a need for medical transcriptionists into the foreseeable future. Although much is made of the possibility of speech recognition technology forcing transcriptionists out of jobs, there are certain things a transcriptionist can do which a machine cannot. For example, speech recognition software and technology is based on the predictability of dictation. Thus, errors in pronunciation, syntax, and grammar at present can only be rectified by expert people, i.e., transcriptionists.

Transcriptionists can adjust to the variation in practitioner speech habits, in their training, in dialect differences, and in foreign doctor dictation language differences.

These are just a few of the facts that bolster the argument that we shall need transcriptionists for a long time to come.

Do I need to be certified?

Not necessarily. The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (formerly AAMT) maintains a Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) program, providing independent certification. A small percentage of medical transcriptionists have obtained this certification. Few employers require the certification.

Do I need to be a good typist to be a medical transcriptionist ?

Certainly. To be a good transcriptionist, one has to have extremely good typing skills but for the start if you have average typing skills and a desire to learn, then with practice you will also develop these skills and we will help you with that.

What is the job market for a medical transcriptionist ?

A well-qualified medical transcriptionist , according to all the latest information, has a secure future. There is a huge demand for such MTs in all areas of the country, although presumably some regions have a stronger demand than others. With national services hiring, location is not as crucial as it once was. While voice recognition systems are seen as a distant threat to the MT's vocation, experts are predicting that it will be years, if ever, before voice recognition takes over the MT's vocation. Even then, experienced MTs will be needed as editors and record managers.

How much can I earn as a medical transcriptionist ?

An average transcriptionist usually earns anywhere between $1500 to $4000, but it varies a lot. There are a lot of factors that come in to play, like number of hours, your speed and the rate at which you are working for your client. Transcriptionists can easily earn from $9 to $20 an hour and usually good medical transcriptionists make excellent money.

Who do medical transcriptionists work for?

Potential clients are doctor's offices, medical clinics, hospitals, rehab centers, ambulance services, company medical centers, and transcription services. The good thing is MTs can work either from home if they wish to avoid the commute and can also work in an office. There is also the option for a MT to acquire his or her own clients, in which case that MT is a self-employed entrepreneur.

How do I find work after I've finished the course?

We will help you find a job. You can check on the listed jobs on our job portal and contact them directly. As a person's employment potential is based on their performance, we cannot guarantee employment but we will support you in your job hunt.

Can I start my own business after I finish the course?

Yes. You can always start your own business and become an entrepreneur. However, it is always better to work for someone initially, gain more experience on how the business works and then think about getting in to MT business. Today much medical transcription is outsourced, that is, done by services or individuals outside of the medical facility where the patients are seen and treated. So it is possible that you will find clients but medical transcription is a business of deadlines. Most reports have to be returned within 24 hours or less from the time of dictation. So one has to be careful when landing in to MT business. As you start learning, you will have more knowledge about pros and cons of MT business.

What do I need to work from home ?

Just a good computer with fast internet download speeds. That is all you need to work from home . Other things that you must have are a transcriber, foot pedal, medical dictionary, drug dictionary, English dictionary, which are all available online and can be setup on the computer.

That's it!! As far as equipment goes there is not a huge investment, even if you want to set up your own business.

How much practice transcription is included in the course?

We will be including around 1000 minutes of dictation in our course material so that you can practice all sorts of dictation types. These dictations are along with their transcript for you to evaluate and score your transcribed reports.

How long does it take to finish the course?

Usually 4 months to 6 months if you can give around 2 hours a day for the online course.

Do I have to follow the syllabus order?

This is not required but it is always better to follow it in order. Some students with healthcare background find it much easier to go on to next level while those with no such background should start the syllabus in order.

What equipment do I need?

A good computer with internet connection and Microsoft office. You can also supplement yourself with online medical dictionary, drug dictionary, Webster dictionary and other transcription software.
